Esteban Garces
Junior Software Developer
I’m a Junior Computer Science student transitioning from a professional background in digital compositing and motion design into software development, bringing a unique combination of technical creativity, problem-solving, and user-centered thinking. I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Computer Graphics, recently completed an Associate of Applied Science in Applications Programming, and I’m currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. Over the past 5+ years, I’ve worked across multimedia production, motion design, and creative technology, experiences that strengthened my ability to think analytically, adapt quickly, collaborate across teams, and build engaging digital experiences.
My transition into software development grew naturally from my passion for technology and solving complex problems beyond the visual layer. Through my programming studies and personal projects, I’ve developed skills in C++, Java, HTML, CSS, GitHub, object-oriented programming, wireframing, prototyping, and backend-focused development concepts. My creative background gives me a different perspective as a developer. I approach software not only from a technical standpoint, but also from the perspective of usability, design thinking, communication, and user experience. This allows me to bridge the gap between functionality and intuitive product design while working effectively with both technical and creative teams.

My Journey
At 18 years old, I left Ecuador after earning a government scholarship that gave me the opportunity to study Computer Graphics at the School of Visual Arts. Moving to the United States was both exciting and challenging, as I had to adapt to a new culture, language, and way of life while pursuing higher education far from home. That opportunity changed the course of my life and sparked my passion for technology, creativity, and digital storytelling. I became the first college graduate in my family, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Computer Graphics while building the foundation for the career I continue to pursue today.
After graduating, I began working professionally in the multimedia and visual effects industry, taking on roles in motion design, digital compositing, 3D production, and creative technology. Over the past five years, I have contributed to commercials, television productions, and creative campaigns while collaborating with artists, supervisors, and production teams in fast-paced environments. My experience includes working with companies such as Barnstorm VFX, Farouk Systems, and Ten Gun Design, where I developed strong problem-solving, communication, and technical skills through creative production work.
While building my creative career, I realized I wanted to deepen my technical knowledge and transition further into software development. To pursue that goal, I completed a UI/UX Bootcamp through Springboard and enrolled at San Jacinto College to pursue an Associate of Applied Science in Applications Programming. During my studies, I gained hands-on experience with C++, Java, object-oriented programming, and software development fundamentals while continuing to strengthen my design and user experience background. My academic dedication led to being recognized on the Dean’s Honor List, an achievement that reflects the discipline and commitment I bring to both my education and professional growth.
At the same time, I took on the responsibility of working full time as a middle school Career and Technical Education teacher, where I teach programming, graphic design, journalism, broadcasting, and information technology to around 100 students each semester. Balancing full-time teaching, college coursework, freelance creative work, and family life has been one of the most demanding experiences of my life, especially while raising a newborn baby. Despite the challenges, those experiences strengthened my resilience, adaptability, leadership, and time management skills, while also reinforcing my passion for helping others learn and grow through technology.
Today, I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science while continuing to work as a CTE teacher while occasionally freelancing as a digital compositor and motion designer, one of my greatest passions within the computer graphics field. My journey has been shaped by persistence, continuous learning, and the willingness to step outside my comfort zone in pursuit of new opportunities. As I continue developing my skills in software engineering, backend development, and full-stack technologies, I hope to combine my technical knowledge, creative background, and real-world experience to build meaningful digital solutions and contribute to innovative teams in the technology industry.
